Health Professionals call to Stop Oil Permits in The Health Protective Zone
Within months of Governor Newsom signing SB 1137 into law, a law mandating a health-protective zone around homes, schools, hospitals and other sensitive receptors, Big Oil spent millions to deceive Californian voters on a referendum to overturn SB 1137. The law went into effect in January of 2023, but it is now on hold until it is voted on through a ballot measure in 2024.

Meanwhile, CalGEM, the state agency responsible for "prioritizing public health and safety" continues to approve rework permits (at a 76% increase from this time last year) right in our backyards. In the first three months of 2023 alone, almost 900 permits have been approved to drill in California. A whopping 62% of them - 556 - were approved within the historic 3,200ft health and safety buffer zone, putting frontline communities STILL at risk for the toxic consequences of oil and gas extraction.

The time has come to voice our demands yet again loud and clear. We're asking Gov. Newsom and Secretary Wade Crowfoot to:
  • Instruct CalGEM to reinitiate the public health rule-making process first launched by CalGEM in 2021 in response to your 2020 Executive Order. CalGEM should move to establish a health-protective rule at least as strong as SB 1137 and based on the recommendations of the California Oil and Gas Public Health Rulemaking Scientific Advisory Panel. We also ask that you ensure that funding is allocated internally within CalGEM’s existing budget and/or from the state budget to accomplish this.

  • Instruct CalGEM to stop issuing permits in the 3200-foot setback; this simple step can and should be taken sooner than the establishment of a more complex rule.

  • Promptly appoint a new permanent CalGEM Supervisor capable of carrying out these two tasks.
